Today we are going to feature one of the truly “bad ass” rides of 1968, the Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. It personified the term “Chevy Muscle Car”. Turn the key on this baby and 375 horsepower was available just under your right foot! All for the price of an additional $292 over the base 350 with 285 bhp; life was wonderful! The sound and feel of the big block was like nothing else. Push the throttle a little and you quickly found things were moving past the side window at a very rapid pace. It pushed you back into the seat cushions like the acceleration would never stop and man did that speedometer move. A rocketship!
Back in the day, we used an unsilenced air filter housing to add a little more intimidation during cruise night. All you had to do was just punch it and the intake sounded as loud as the factory pipes - it kinda sounded like a jet engine spooling up as the big 4 barrel drew in all of the ambient air in the immediate area. Man, a high compression big block can really move the air!
These things attracted cops more than a half-price sale at the donut shop and staying at legal speed was a real chore. Just listening to that L78 V8 was pure pleasure. You couldn’t stop at a drive-in without drawing a crowd. Yeah, chicks loved it. The Mustang crowd tended to stay at a safe distance and give dirty looks. Riding around in one of these on a Saturday night was more fun than should be allowed. It was truly a chevy muscle car and an iconic classic.
